This letter is in response to the letter posted 9-6-2011 at 11:07 am by 100 Papas Na Boca...
My friend do you know that what you're doing is a crime? Defamation of character, particularly in its written form, libel, is a crime. Perhaps you are aware of that and that is why you don't sign your name. Perhaps you are actually someone who entered the contest and didn't do as well as you had hoped? Or perhaps you can't accept that your child wasn't gifted with the angelic voice you had imagined? I don't know what your motivation is. I don't know why you feel the need to drag my name through the mud but I do know that what you say is made up of despicable lies.
Neither I nor this contest has ever promised to make anyone a star. That is simply preposterous. The contest is for both children and adults of any ethnic origin to use as an opportunity to examine whether or not they would truly like to pursue a future in the music industry. There are no promises made about anything other than the fact that the 1st place winners will be provided with the professional recording of a CD (- this year and last, produced by Hernani Raposo). This can be a stepping stone to a future in music... or not. That is up to the contestants, not me. And I say contestants not winners because it is not always the winners who are the most serious or even the most gifted musicians. They may simply have the best voice or have been lucky enough to have given a great performance when it really counted.
The contestants that I have been able to bring with me to my shows were given the extra opportunity to sing for a different audience, on a different stage, in a totally different environment. In the music business, experience counts just as much, if not more than it does in most other businesses. Practising is not the same as performing and you need an audience to perform.
I often have a hard time convincing the clubs I perform in to let the contestants come onstage. Usually they and their parents or spouses are given free dinners by the clubs. Sometimes they are paid and sometimes they are not. That depends on the club but I certainly do NOT earn any extra money for bringing them in. The jobs are mine with or without them.
Regarding the rules changing - yes, the rules change a small degree every year. That is because every year we run into situations where what is obvious to us, isn't obvious to others. The rules are amended for the sake of clarity.
Also, this year we have the opportunity to present the first place winner with a distribution contract by a major international label for their completed CD, not just the recording of it. Because of the amount of work and time involved in properly promoting an artist, it is imperative that this year's 1st place winners be serious about their music. We have asked that they promise to consider being managed by our affiliates so that we can fully invest the time and money needed. They are completely free to decline the offer but must they must be willing to hear it through. I imagine that is the part you found difficult to understand in the newly posted rules.
As for the contestants who have continued on in music, I don't keep track of everything but previous winners George Marques and Kayla de Brito, along with contestant Brian Vasconcelos, all appeared together just recently for the anniversary of a Portuguese club (The poster will soon be on our website ascjs.com in the "Where Are They Now" section). Kayla also performed New Year's on the same billing as Toy and I am aware that George has performed on various occasions around town including Festas da Nossa Senhora da Luz. Previous 2nd place winner Sandra da Silva was performing fado extensivley although I haven't seen any recent advertisement. Andre Carneiro, a former Juvenile winner, also continued to perform but again, I have not seen anything recently. At the end of the 3, 4 and 5th seasons, the 1st place winners of each category have appeared at the CHIN picnic. Maisy Vause and Veronica Domingues are both still finishing up their albums. This year's juvenile winner Julia Debowska went on to win another contest in Poland and is going to sing for the pope next week in Rome (yes, I'm serious). Chantal Carneiro has been busy attending the classes she won for her first place win, including extensive workshops with former Canadian Idol judge Zack Werner. Finalists were invited to sing the national anthems at Queens Park for Portugal Day and they are invited to sing there again for Canada Day. Some of them were invited to sing for the Ambassador of Cuba also at Queens Park. This summer some of them sang at the prestigious Royal York Hotel with Zack Werner and at Dundas Square along with Duo Santos and Zack Werner. I'm happy to say that Zack has been working with us full time.
As I said, the contest makes no promises of stardom to anyone although entering the contest seems to have been just the kind of push that little Heather Russell needed to get the ball rolling. She is now in the studio in Los Angeles recording her first album and being groomed for inevitable stardom by Simon Cowell.
I am proud to have started this contest in the Portuguese community and I am just as proud to be able to welcome contestants from other ethnic communities. I am proud to be able to create a setting where we can share our cultures as an accepting and united group.
Again, I'm not sure what your own problem is with me but I get an overwhelming sense that you are so thoroughly dissatisfied with your own life that you have nothing better to do than pick on others who appear in your jealous little mind to be more successful than they you believe they deserve to be. I'm not sure who made you judge, jury and executioner but you obviously don't really know anything about the contest. You know nothing about me or how much I do for this contest. You know nothing about what goes on behind the scenes, the amount of work that goes into this. I'm not complaining but I just wonder why the heck you are? What is the point? You do damage to our community with derisive and divisive rants such as these. You pit people against each other with your baseless accusations. Long live freedom of speech but it does not give you the right to tell lies and promote hatred.

John Santos
